Generate Custom Government Sales Language by Leveraging AI
How the latest generative content technology can catalyze federal sales teams
You may have heard about, or even tried the tool ChatGPT, a generative language model developed by OpenAI, which has the ability to generate human-like responses to text prompts. This “generative AI” has the potential to streamline government contracting by automating labor-intensive tasks.
For example, we can leverage large language models to create compelling first draft responses to government proposals and RFIs, reducing the need for tedious research and repackaging of boilerplate language to fit a new opportunity. As an industry, we’re still in the early innings of the application of AI to GovCon, but we think this technology will increasingly allow companies to supercharge the quality, completeness, and cycle time of any written sales content.
At GovCompete, our customers have been beta testing our new product that allows them to more efficiently generate custom sales language. Our technology leverages multiple proprietary and OpenAI models (including early access to OpenAI’s GPT-4) to synthesize a customer’s past content, the specific requirements of the current opportunity, and the target customer strategic objectives into draft text.
While our product is still early and requires more work to fix its shortcomings, our customers are already using it to save substantial time in crafting federal RFI responses. It can also be leveraged for marketing materials, Broad Agency Announcements, SBIRs, and more. Here’s a quick tour of how the product works:
Tools like ChatGPT are incredibly powerful, but can be difficult to tune to your specific use case. Our app draws from YOUR past content, meaning the power of AI is customized to your core capabilities, history, and style. Here, we’re uploading a library of submissions related to natural language processing.
You can instruct the tool on what prompt to answer by pasting the formatted or unformatted text from the Sources Sought / RFI, or by inserting your own prompt. In this example, we’re using prompts from a USSOCOM RFI on misinformation detection software.
We also include relevant portions of the background, scope of work, and/or objectives from the performance work statement.
Finally, you can include any relevant agency goals or objectives that you’d like your response to incorporate. We added strategic objectives from USSOCOM’s recently-published vision statement. The model is able to intelligently determine which objectives to include.
Responses are generated in a few minutes to the word count range you specify and can be saved or downloaded to a Word document for additional edits, or you can iterate on the generated content by requesting adjustments, referring to the “answer” you want changed (e.g., make the answer more specific based on my past work).
We think this current version of our product only scratches the surface of how generative AI can empower federal sales teams (and how this tool can be built out further). To be clear, we believe this technology will enhance, but never substitute for, expert guidance in BD and proposal development. But it could shave hours or days off of cumbersome, manual processes – starting with a workable first draft uniquely tailored to your target opportunity and based on your own past content. This means more time to build relationships, construct a well-vetted pipeline, and, ultimately, generate more wins.
